Painted with the assistance of 10 apprentices ages 14-18 from Baltimore YouthWorks “Art @ Work” summer employment program coordinated by Jubilee Arts Center.
Sandtown/Penn North (Historic Pennsylvania Ave.) was the neighborhood at the center of protest and unrest, following the death of Freddie Gray. The design was inspired by ideas, values and the community’s hopes for the future, collected through interviewing Sandtown residents during neighborhood canvassing.
On the left, a portrait of Jaila, one of our apprentices, and a Sandtown resident. She is holding a daffodil, one of the first flowers to bloom in the spring, and a symbol of rebirth. The progression of time represented by imagery of a family walking together from the Pennsylvania Ave. of the past, towards the present. Above the buildings, the South African Protea flower, a symbol of hope and perseverance. The Gladiolas flower (named after the Gladiators of Ancient Rome) a symbol of strength and integrity; alongside Butterfly milkweed, blue cardinal and cinnamon fern, plants native to Maryland.
